Hamilton Business Leaders

Four of Hamilton’s leading business organizations – the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce, the REALTORS® Association of Hamilton-Burlington, the Hamilton-Halton Home Builders’ Association  and the Hamilton International Airport – have come together to form Hamilton Business Leaders.

Our goal is to influence the outcome of the elections. Our agenda is simple: jobs and prosperity.

We want to see business-friendly candidates elected who will help to turn Hamilton’s economy around.  While we won’t field or endorse a slate of candidates, we will identify which ones agree with the issues we see as critical to Hamilton’s business environment.

BACKGROUND

Earlier in 2010, as a lead up to the  municipal election, the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce commissioned a professional research study to poll citizens to see if the general public is aligned with the Chamber’s advocacy issues:

  • Light Rail Transit (LRT) Funding
  • Pan Am Games - finalizing the site selection
  • Central GO Station
  • Transit Commission
  • CIty Wide Development Corporation
  • Urban Boundary Expansion AEGD (Airport Employment Growth District), along with a mixed adequate inventory of employment lands (e.g. Brownfields, etc.).

We engaged the services of Joan Hendershot of Hendershot Research to conduct the survey. Overall the results show strong support for the issues, especially the need to focus on issues that will bring jobs and prosperity to Hamilton.

An interesting development happened as we planned to undertake the survey.  In discussion with other local chambers, the Flamborough Chamber of Commerce decided to come onboard as a partner in the survey and added a seventh issue to the agenda regarding area ratings.

As we continued to discuss the survey with other Hamilton business organizations, the REALTORS® Association of Hamilton-Burlington, the Hamilton-Halton Home Builders’ Association and the Hamilton International Airport also joined the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce as partners in taking a proactive lead in increasing awareness of issues that affect the growth of business in Hamilton.

As 2011 is also an election year, we are continuing to work together as Hamilton Business Leaders (HBL) to be influential, not just informative, during the federal and provincial elections. Over the next few months, we will be employing a very proactive and comprehensive election campaign strategy which will engage the community and champion issues that are critical to promoting jobs and prosperity.
